Conjunctivitis, or pink eye, is so named because it is due to an irritation of the conjuctiva, the mucus membrane that lines the eyes and eyelids, causing a pinkish color in the area that is irritated and inflamed.

In addition to the pink color around the area of irritation, symptoms of conjunctivitis include pus discharging from the irritated area, itchiness, pain, swelling, and intolerance to bright lights. The eyelids may also stick together after being closed for some time, such as after sleeping or napping.

The primary causes of conjunctivitis are allergies, infection, poor diet, nutritional deficiencies, and stress.

The use of pharmaceutical drugs can also cause conjunctivitis, as well as other types of vision problems. These include antihistamines, diuretics, oral contraceptives, steroids, chlorpromazine, digoxin, ethambutol, gold (used to treat arthritis and lupus), haloperidol, hydroxychloroquine sulfate, and tetracycline.

There are natural cures for Conjunctivitis that do not involve the use of pharmaceutical drugs. They involve restoring the biochemical balance of the body, and making dietary and lifestyle changes designed to improve one's general health.
