Insomnia can be characterized by the following symptoms: difficulty falling asleep, waking up often during the night and having trouble going back to sleep, waking up too early in the morning and un-refreshing sleep. Insomnia can result from a vast array of issues, low blood sugar imbalances, digestive disorders, breathing problems, stress, depression, prescription and non prescription drugs, organ weakness, hormonal imbalances, lack of exercise and mental/emotional factors. Lack of sleep puts you at greater risk for other health problems and leaves you in a very compromised situation.

Sleeping pills are often taken to combat the sleep disorders such as insomnia. The problem with this approach is that sleeping pills can often cause nausea, vomiting and dizziness. To make matters worse, you are actually putting more chemicals into your body, which is already in a compromised state due to sleep deprivation. You body ends up having to use up additional resources to process these chemicals. As a result of that you feel even more tired. The worse thing about taking sleeping pills in an attempt to "cure" insomnia is that eventually your body builds up tolerance and you end up taking increasing amounts just to fall asleep.

The risks of using prescription and over-the-counter sleep medication has not been popularized, simple because the sleeping pills industry is immensely profitable, making billion dollars of yearly sales. People do not realize that there are natural cures for insomnia that do not involve the consumption of pharmacological agents. There are simple lifestyle and dietary changes you can make that will dramatically improve the quality of your sleep.
