Bruising refers to bruises - darkish black and blue marks on the skin that are usually formed without a cut.

Typically, the first discolorations of bruises are black and blue. Then, when the hemoglobin of the blood breaks down, the color turns to yellow. Bruises are also associated with some swelling and surrounding redness of the tissues.

Bruising occurs due to blood that leaks out of capillaries, generally after an injury, and collects just beneath the surface of the skin.

Bruising is more common in children, primarily as a result of accidents. Bruising also occurs more frequently in women than in men, which may be due to the estrogen demands of vitamin C on the body.

Bruises that do not fade after a week, or are recurrent without cause, may be signs of bleeding disorders or vitamin C and bioflavonoid deficiencies. Or they could be signs of underlying stresses on the body that continually deplete the vitamin C stores. In such cases, it is important that you see your physician.

There are natural cures for bruising that do not involve the use of pharmaceutical drugs. They involve restoring the biochemical balance of the body, and making dietary and lifestyle changes designed to improve one's general health.

Bruises: the facts

We’ve all experienced bruising at some point in our lives, and of course we all recognise a bruise when we see one. But how much do we really know about bruises, what they actually are, and the best way to deal with them?

A bruise is also called a contusion, or sometimes doctors also call bruising an ecchymosis. A bruise is essentially an injury to biological tissue, in which the capillaries have been damaged. This allows blood to seep into the surrounding tissue. The build-up of blood increases the pressure within the skin, pushing it into nerves. This pressure causes the pain we feel when touching the affected area.

Although bruises can induce pain, they are not normally dangerous. However, sometimes, in their severest form, bruises can be associated with serious injuries, including fractures and internal bleeding.

As we get older, the skin becomes thinner and more elastic, making us more prone to bruising. But some people, whatever their age, are just more prone to bruising than others. And women bruise more easily than men do.

Of course, bruises are part of the way the body heals itself, and most are minor and clear up quickly.

Bruise treatments

So what should you do if you get a nasty bruise? Very rarely, bruising is so severe that it is removed surgically, but this only happens if the bruise is so large that the body cannot reabsorb it. Mostly, however medical bruise treatments are not needed.

Natural bruise cures and treatments deal with bruises holistically, without surgery or drugs. Of course, the best natural bruise cures involve preventative measures to avoid getting bruises in the first place. One of these, for example, is to eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. This will give your body the nutrients it needs for healthy blood clotting.

Another of the recognised natural bruise treatments is to apply direct pressure with ice at once. This constricts the damaged blood vessels, and keeps blood leakage to a minimum. Equally, if you raise the injured body part so it is higher than your heart, this will reduce blood leakage.

There are other natural bruise cures around, including herbs, Vitamin K cream and things like witch hazel, and many people love them and find them very effective.
