A carminative is a substance that is used against cramps of the digestive tract in combination with flatulence. It promotes digestion and peristalsis and assists in expulsion of intestinal gas. Some well-known carminatives are: anise seed, cardamom, fennel, ginger, nutmeg, peppermint, spearmint, and thyme.
